Hongkong, 8th. September, 1905

I have the honour to inform you

that the Honourable William H. Taft, United States Secreta-

-ry for War, arrived in Hongkong on Sunday the 1st.instant

in the United States Transport "Logan" from Manila, where

he had been enquiring into matters connected with the

Government of the Philippines.

Mr. Taft was accompanied by his

personal staff, by Major-General Corbin, Commanding the

Troops in the Philippines and his staff, by Vice-Governor

Ide of the Philippines and by 6 members of the United

States Senate and 22 of the United States House of Repre-

-sentatives. The official party numbered 61 including Miss

Alice Roosevelt and 17 other ladies; there was also an un-

official party of 29 including 5 ladies.
